How the time calculation works
For two clock times, subtract the start from the end. Turn on “next day” when the shift crosses midnight: 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM becomes 8 hours. Clock-time results use a 24-hour day; they do not include a particular date's daylight saving change.
For full dates, the calculator compares actual timestamps in your browser's local time zone. A daylight saving transition can make a calendar day 23 or 25 elapsed hours. The decimal-hours figure is useful for timesheets: 8 hours 30 minutes is 8.5 hours.
Common time duration questions
How many hours are between 8:30 AM and 5:30 PM?
There are 9 elapsed hours. If your shift includes a one-hour unpaid break, subtract it separately to get 8 paid hours.
How do I calculate an overnight shift?
Enter the start and end times, then select “End time is on the next day.” For example, 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM is 8 hours.
Why can two dates be 23 or 25 hours apart?
When a daylight saving clock change happens between the dates, the actual elapsed time can differ from the calendar-day count. The date calculator uses your device's local time zone to account for that change.
